DIY – Make Your Own Lamp Shade

Do you have that lamp sitting at home with just the most BORING, UGLIEST lamp shade?! Well I do and I have lived with it for a bit now but after this week of rainy days, I just couldn’t look at it any longer.

I went to my local ink shop (thank G for the West Village, they still have specialty shops in NY) and bought sponge brushes and this charcoal black acrylic paint by Claudine Hellmuth.

Then instead of using blue tape I used clear packing tape because it lends more flexibility to allow the paint to bleed through rather than blue tape that doesn’t.

Then I measured the shade and mine happened to be 15″L so I divided it into three and taped off 5″ on each side leaving the middle open. Then I got straight to painting! First I used dry paint (no water) then I dipped my brush into a SMALL BIT of water and evened out the dry paint. Paint as close to the edges as possible with the wet brush and watch as the paint drips through the tape! Don’t get nervous- this is supposed to happen! 🙂

Then when you are done take the tape off. You will see that where the tape started there is a distinct line of black and then bleeding paint- try to smooth that line out with a wet brush so that it bleeds into the bleeding paint.

VOILA! You have yourself a custom lamp shade! TAKE THAT ABC HOME!

Before and After!
